Pursuing the acquisition of a profitable small business

We are searching for, and plan to acquire, a small business with demonstrated consistent profitability. While no one characteristic is set in stone, the following are some of the criteria that will guide our search.

EBITDA between $750k and $2m annually.

We have no particular industry focus, but we do have a strong focus on certain business characteristics.

Our ideal acquisition is decidedly not glamorous. We do not want a hot industry, nor do we want recent spectacular growth. We want a company that has established dominance in a particular small market niche that we've probably never even realized exists. We want a company with slow growth and a broad, recurring customer base. We seek a business whose quality of product or service is important to its customers but whose price is relatively insignificant to their overall budget.

Our primary geographic focus is New England, but our search will also examine opportunities in the Colorado/Wyoming/Montana area as well as the Pacific Northwest (potentially even into Canada). Opportunities proximal to rural undeveloped areas are a plus. However, geography will simply help us limit our search to a manageable size--for the right company we will seriously consider almost any geographic locale.
